As voluntary recalls go, this is a strong one. Toyota is asking the owners of 2003-2004 Corollas and Corolla Matrix, along with those who have a 2004-2005 RAV4, to stop driving their vehicles immediately and get faulty airbags repaired or replaced. The company says it’s more likely that a part inside the airbags could explode and shoot sharp metal fragments because of their age, and both the Corolla and Matrix models are under a separate recall because the airbags can deploy without a crash. How serious is the company? In the statement about the recall, Toyota said, “Owners SHOULD NOT DRIVE these vehicles until the FREE safety recall repair has been conducted,” and recommends that owners should contact the dealer and arrange for repairs where the vehicle is or having it towed to the dealership. Owners can check to see if their vehicle is affected by the recall by going to the recall page on the Toyota website and entering their VIN number or license plate number.
