Granger Smith Shares Last Memory Of 3-Year-Old Son, River, Before He Died

54th Academy Of Country Music Awards - Arrivals

Granger Smith and his family are doing the best they can to keep their heads up in the wake of losing his youngest child.

On Wednesday (June 19), Granger and his wife Amber uploaded a video titled "Finding Light In Our Darkest Time" on YouTube to update fans on how they are managing life after their 3-year-old son, River, died in a tragic drowning accident earlier this month.

In the 27-minute video, the "Merica" singer reminisces on the last memory he shared with the infant before tragedy struck. On that day, Granger recalls doing gymnastics with his daughter London, 7, while his sons Lincoln, 5, and River having a water gun fight. It was then, Granger says, he had the sudden revelation: "Soak up this moment, it's not going to last forever."

"Somewhere between 30 seconds and 3 minutes," Granger continued, he and his wife were "inside of our pool gate doing CPR on our son." The parents rushed their child to the hospital, however, doctors were unable to revive him. River died two days later.

"Love those close to you. Soak up those moments. Live for today. Live in the present because we're not guaranteed tomorrow," Granger reflected. “God gave River to us for three years and that was his mission. And I don't believe God takes anyone too soon."

Of the tragedy, Granger remembers his baby girl, London, asking how long her little brother lived, to which he responded, "Just over a thousand days."

The crooner had to hold back tears pondering the notion: “If you could live those days barefoot, red hair flying back on your tractor full speed ahead, if you could do that with your family around you, with no real care in the world — that’s a good way to live."

“Don’t feel sorry for us. We feel very blessed. We had an incredible boy for three years and we feel good about that," concluded, before the clip panned to a compilation of sweet images of River in his memory.

The Smith family created a charity t-shirt to raise funds for the Dell Children's Medical Center in Texas, where River was treated before he passed. Learn more about how to donate here.
